—————————————————————————————————————————————

Dear all students and parents,

Welcome back! Thank you so much for pre-registering your children in May.  That really helped us!  A special welcome to our new families, we are thrilled to have you join our school and community.

Last Academic year was very busy and successful; we had completed various tasks, including participating all of the London Chinese community groups to celebrate the Chinese New Year.  We were so proud of our excellent performance at the 2nd International Language Multi-culture event.  You might also remember our Pizza party on June 12.  If you would review our newsletter from Sep. 2009 to June 2010, you could find out how many successful activities that we have completed.  Of course, we should also thank our teachers for working so hard for our regular school hours on each Saturday.  I sincerely appreciated all of teachers and parents and volunteers who selflessly contributed your time and heart to the school and to our students.  Without your support, the school can’t develop and grow.  I believe everyone realized how much we could accomplish when we worked together. I hope we could continue with the same spirit and work together tightly again this year to achieve more.

The school will be 30 years old this year.  We will be planning for our anniversary celebration.  We welcome anyone who is interested to share your ideas and suggestions for this special event.  Please participate in our “Anniversary Event Planning Competition”.  Please contact me for more details in September 2010.  You will receive a prize after your ideas having been accepted.

I’ll be in the office every Saturday from 9:00am – 3:30pm, and will welcome having a chat if you are free or if you have any concern about school; I’ll do my best to solve the problem together with you.  Looking forward to working together with you!

Sincerely yours,

Linda Hsieh

2010 Graduation and End of Year Assembly

On June 12, 2010, London Chinese School held the 2010 Graduation and End of Year Assembly to recognize and honor students for their accomplishments over the past school year. All classes from JK to MG12 were gathered together in the gym to celebrate the last day of school. Principal Linda Hsieh gave an opening greeting and introduced the guest speakers who presented the Academic Competition Award to the winners of each class. After that, Grade 9 students presented a short drama. Their funny dress-up and humorous language brought many laughter from audience. Allan Quan Award was presented to Lawrence Ng (MG12) to recognize his contributions to the school. Two other Grade 12 students, Anna Xie & Shelley Yuan received the Summer Camp Scholarship funded by Chinese Heritage Language Education. This assembly is also a special event for all Grade 12 students. On behalf of the school, two students from Grade 11 gave a farewell speech to all the graduates to wish them all the best in their future endeavors. Students from Grade 10 &11 also sang a song “Tomorrow will be better”. The sweet melody and voice greatly impressed everyone. Then the principal presented the Graduates Certificate to all the Grade 12s. Three representatives from Gr.12 gave a big thanks to the school and teachers for what they have done for them. The whole class presented two songs to further express their gratitude. When hearing the familiar melody of the school anthem, all the audience started to sing along with Grade 12s.

After the assembly, a pizza party was held for students, teachers, and parents to celebrate the great day together. This event was organized and sponsored by our parent group. A special thanks is extended to Mr. Tony Dou for his generosity of donating all the pizzas. At the same time, a variety of fun games were organized in the gym for everyone to play. The gifts for the games were donated by Mr. Stephen Leung and Mrs. Linda Hiesh.

Evaluation and Vision  —-  Written for 2010

Time of graduation again! On behalf of London Chinese School, I wish to congratulate you all on your completion of credit courses.  I also wish you all the best in your coming years of studying for those who are embarking another journey.

Your hard work, consistent effort and dedication to the school have earned you the respect and admiration of your fellow students as well as that of your teachers.  When many of your friends might have expected you to be elsewhere on a Saturday, you are here to study.  You are excellent role models for others.  Your commitment, enthusiasm and proficiency in the Chinese language is applauded.

“Learn a Language, Share a Culture, Change the World” epitomizes, for me, the driving force behind the learning of languages.  Our vision in the future is that we not only encourage all children of the Chinese background to come to the school to learn their mother tongue language, but also create a comfortable learning environment for the children of the non-Chinese background.  Our program does not represent only an additional credit on your report cards, it represents the wish that I hope you all share with me, to better our world by promoting cross-cultural understanding and acceptance, to show pride in ones’ cultural heritage and to act as international ambassadors in the new world where frontiers will undoubtedly be changed and freedom will hopefully be the password.

I wish you all continued success in your studies, whether near or far, along with health and happiness, we will work together as our motto says:” Today, the school offers me the service; Tomorrow, I will contribute to the school.”

by 孙蘋

On May 1st 2010, the second annual Multicultural Event was held at John Paul II Secondary School.   All programs of the International Language Program were joined together to organize this event supported by the London District Catholic School board.  We, London Chinese School, were honoured to be one of the biggest participating language schools.  Other schools include Assyrian, Ethiopian, Greek, Korean, Pakistan, Poland, Portuguese, Spanish and Vietnamese.     The main purpose of this event was not only to display and learn about different cultures through videos, performances, food, and games, but also to raise money so all proceeds can be sent to Haiti.

When I arrived at John Paul II Secondary School, our principal, vice principal, teachers and student volunteers had already started in preparation for the events in the atrium.  Tables were set for many activities, displays and food.  Some of our teachers and parents were very generous and donated different kinds of food and snacks including dumplings, fortune cookies, fried rice, sushi and much more.   Our senior students and teachers also helped in demonstrations such as Chinese painting, calligraphy, paper cutting, chopsticks usage, and Chinese chess.  Our students also performed a magnificent dance of the Thousand Hand Buddha and a beautiful song played with the traditional Chinese instrument Guzheng by Alice.  They both received thunderous applause from the audience.

As I walked around the atrium to tables set up by the different International Language Schools, I enjoyed looking at their displays of their traditional costumes and of course, sampling their traditional cuisine.  This multicultural event gives me a valuable opportunity to walk into different communities that is less familiar to me and more importantly, when you learn about different cultures, you can respect each other more.

2nd competition

2nd Canadian Chinese Proficiency Competition

Written by Alice Leys

On April 11th, 2010, I attended the 2nd Canadian Chinese Proficiency Competition in Toronto. There were 2 categories; Chinese and non-Chinese. As I am only half-Chinese, I thought it would be more appropriate to enter in the non-Chinese category. My other three friends entered in the Chinese category.

There were three parts to the competition. Firstly, was a Chinese speech competition. It was worth 50 marks. The second part was the knowledge questionnaire. That was worth 20 marks. The last section was a Talent contest, also worth 20 marks. The whole competition was out of 70 points, but there was a prize/trophy for each category, plus a prize for the winner of all three categories.

For the speech portion of the Competition, I didn’t do as well as I had hoped. I was quite nervous, and stumbled a bit near the end of my speech. I also thought the judges were quite intimidating when I was up on the stage. Giving speeches was never my finest skill, especially when in a language other than English, so I’m not surprised I was not the best in that section.

I did quite well on the second part, however, as they were quite simple and direct questions about China. The questions themselves were very diverse; it ranged from ancient musical instruments to grammar and politics. I felt very comfortable answering these questions, as I am very well-known in the subject of Chinese trivia.

The third section of the competition was definitely my favourite and strongest performance. 5 years ago, I traveled to China with my mother for vacation in the summertime. It was then that I learned how to play the GuZheng, a Chinese Harp-like instrument. For this competition, I played a 3 minute song on the instrument. I was quite confident I would do well in this part of the Competition. I was right.

After all the candidates had gone, there was a lunch break, and then a performance. There were lots of dancing, singing, and other musical displays, and I enjoyed them all very much. Several important representatives and sponsors also made quick speeches, and then finally it was time to hand out the awards and trophies.

I ended up winning the trophy for the Talent Contest, as everyone seemed to expect. I could see my parents smiling and taking pictures of me in the audience seats. After all the trophies were handed out, a television news reporter, a radio host, and a news reporter came up and interviewed me. It was quite fun, and I ended up getting on the radio, newspaper, and TV all in one day!

All in all, I thought the whole competition was a lot of fun, and I got to meet so many new people. I see winning a trophy and a fancy certificate as just a bonus, as I definitely took a lot of experience and good memories from the competition!

Hopefully next year, I will be able to enter the competition again, and maybe I will win for the second time. But even if I don’t, I would love to gain even more experience and new friends than this year, especially because now I know exactly what to expect. I hope all the other candidates who participated in the competition also feel the same way, and I can’t wait to see them all again next year!
